Guided Reading Chapter 3

I know I'm late, but I'm linking up with the girls over at Freebie-licious in the summer book study. Yes, I skipped posting about chapter 2. It seemed pointless. Here's the synopsis. Chapter 2 was all about how will you assess your students? I have to assess my students with Fountas & Pinnell's Reading Running Record. Period. End of Story. So you see there wouldn't have been much to post.
Moving on to Chapter 3!

Chapter 3 was all about working with your pre-A and level A students. These are your students who don't know very many letters, sounds, sight words, and most of whom aren't ready for guided reading yet. If they are ready, they are only able to do simple books with familiar sight words and picture clues for unknown words.

Here are a few highlights from the chapter.

1) Have students who don't know all their letters trace the letters every day while saying the letter and the name of a picture that starts with that letter. I don't know that I'll be able to do this every day during the year. I don't often have parent volunteers or helpers that can do this with the kids like the book suggests. HOWEVER, right now I'm teaching summer Pre-K and since there are two teachers I am able to pull the students who don't know their letters and do this. I'm eager to see the improvement by the end of the summer.

2) Have students work with their names and the letters in their names. One of the ideas was to make a puzzle with the students names. I did that with my little iii group. We started with just two puzzle pieces, and each day cut another piece to make more. The puzzle is kept in an envelope that has their name written on it so they can independently check if they put their name in the right order. I always have them trace and say the letters in their names before they open up the envelope to start putting their puzzle together.

3) Sight word work. I've always believe sight word work is just as important as phonics work. The more words the student knows, the easier time they have. Instead of getting frustrated trying to sound out ALL the words in a sentence, students with strong sight word knowledge can read the words they know, then sound out the few they don't. Much less frustrating. #nomoretearsplease

Here's what my general weekly synopsis for sight words goes, both during summer school and the regular year:

Monday - I introduce the new words and we practice the new words and any old words on flashcards a few times. Once they've got the hang of it we'll play simple games with them - such as swat the word, or one kid holds up the word and calls on someone to say it who then holds up the next word, etc.

Tuesday - We review our words, maybe go through the flash cards once or twice, then I introduce a pocket chart story that uses the words we are working on. I point to each word and read the sentence, then point again while the students read each one.

You can see all my pocket chart packs here:

Wednesday - We review our words, review the sentences in the pocket chart, then we do a fun activity such as a cut and paste or color by sight word page.

I finally got my color by sight word pack up! You can see it here:

Thursday - We review our words, review the pocket chart sentences, then we play a simple game where I take out all the pictures and I call on a student to read the sentence, find the matching picture and match it up, then point while everyone reads the sentence. They love this! After, we'll do a simple fill in the blank worksheet where the kids will have to read the pocket chart, then read the sentence on their page and fill in the missing word. These worksheets are all included in my pocket chart packs.

Friday - Fridays are special! On Fridays after we review our sight words and pocket chart story, the kids get their own little book version of the pocket chart story! We practice concepts of print such as finding the front and back of the book, title, etc. Then we read through the book together, practicing pointing to each word as we go. After we practice reading together, I go around and listen to individual kids read while they color the pictures in the book. Sometimes I have them put these books in their book boxes for read to self/read to someone, and sometimes I let them take them home to read to their families!
You can see all my little book packs here:

And that's all I've got for chapter 3, pretty sure I got this up just in time to not be a whole chapter behind! Looking forward to Chapter 4!!

A whole lot of random

I apologize that this post is going to be a whole lot of random. Between teaching summer Pre-K, trying to get things ready for my own classroom, trying to get stuff ready for TPT, and trying to RELAX; I don't have nearly as much time as I'd like. I'm behind on the guided reading books study - hopefully I can post about that later this week, and I haven't even started the books on Whole Brain Teaching and Daily 5 for math. But..... what can ya do? Anywho, the Preschoolers are napping, so here's a roundup full of random!

Random thing #1: We have winners for the giveaway! Congrats to Kari Rood and Lynn Young! I'll be giving your email information to the girls soon and you can be expecting goodies in your inbox!

Random thing #2: The Bucket List -

Let's see....
1)I haven't even started the newsletters, but I will definitely do those before August as I'm looking forward to using them with my class in conjunction with the editable calendars.

2)The Common Core Assessments are underway! Woo hoo! Kindergarten Counting and Cardinality should be up soon, with the other math and literacy strands to follow!

3)Tried to go to the beach - got rained out and went to see Monsters University instead! We saw Despicable Me 2 recently also. (we're little kids in adult bodies).

4)I'm almost done with the legs of my stool, I'll be getting some help on the top!

5)I'm behind on the book study, but I will post this week!

6)And I THINK I've managed to post twice a week so far this summer.

Random Thing #3 - We're going to be celebrating Christmas in July with the Summer Pre-K students, so I've started a new pack that will be up soon! It will have some center games, coloring activities, crafts, writing and more! I'm super excited to celebrate Christmas in July, since this is my first summer working I've never gotten the chance. I'm also planning on using this pack with my Kinderpups in December since this is more what Christmas looks like here in Florida.... none of that fluffy white stuff!

Random Thing #4 - I found this cart for $28 at Big Lots! It's exactly like the one I keep all my daily 5 word work options in, but different colors. Of course, I had to make more labels with matching colors. Now my students will have EVEN MORE word work options. They are going to love it! You can find the original labels (red, purple, orange, green, and blue) as a freebie in my store, and the newer labels (pink, violet, lime, aqua) will be posted as a new Fan Freebie on my Facebook page later this week!

Freebie on TPT:

Coming soon to my facebook fan freebie page (make sure to like my page!)

And that's about it for now!! Thanks for riding the wave of randomness with me!

Favorite Pins Friday!!

What a beautiful Friday!! It's pouring down rain, but I got to sleep in till 11!! Hubby and I hit up Denny's Diner for breakfast, the shoe store for new gym shoes, socks, and bags, and now I"m here ready to link up with The First Grade Parade for Favorite Pins Friday!

I would love for you to follow me on pinterest! Just click here:

I don't know about you but I spend WAY too much time on pinterest. I actually 'like' things more than I repin them. For some reason it's easier to click the heart, than to click repin, and choose a board. One less step. Lazy, I know. But give me a break, I'm not on summer vacation like the rest of you!
Anywho, these are my favorite pins from this week!

School:

teacher stool
This stool from Laurie Cole Designs is my inspiration for my classroom stool. Without the cowboy theme! Unfortunately, the pin doesn't actually link anywhere.

Food:

This pin is full of crock pot recipes perfect for summer. Just what I need!

Throwback Thursday! {July 4, 2013}

HAPPY JULY 4th!  I'll be heading out for fireworks and fun at the beach later, but right now it's time to link up with Cara Carroll for another edition of....

This week I'm highlighting a post from last year all about Open House/Meet the Teacher/Orientation.  It's full of ideas to make a great first impression on parents and students! Make sure you read all the way through, there is something special at the end!
HAPPY 4th!!!!

The weekday before school starts (Friday this year since school starts on a Monday) we hold "Meet The Teacher" where families come and see the room, meet the teacher, and pick up information. They can also drop off their supplies if they bring them.

Here's my room all set up for Meet The Teacher. We grabbed the balloon idea off pinterest from HERE. Each balloon is attached to a poster that they take home and decorate as an "All about me collage" for our student of the month boards.

This is the packet of papers that was at their desks. Many of these were from (or adapted from) Cara Carroll. On Top was their dismissal clip, which parents clipped to our dismissal chart so I would know how they go home on the first day. They also had an order form for our first day fundraiser (more about that later) and a to do list.

Next was a paper all about me, and a class supply list -

Two student information forms -

Volunteer Form and our District Student Release form (for pictures, videos etc.) -

Our Class Schedule and a letter outlining my discipline system -

A paper outlining what the students will be learning in Kindergarten, and Expectations -

When parents finished filling out the forms they sorted them into three baskets (student information, release forms, volunteer forms) on top of my cubbies -

I also set up brown paper bags around our carpet for supplies -

Each one was labelled with a supply so that students who brought theirs could sort them right into the bags and not dump them into a huge pile on a table for me to sort later (this way they do all the work!)

_____________________________________________________________________________________
The bag labels I used for sorting supplies are now a freebie for my facebook fans! Please like my page, then click on fan freebies to grab yours!
