Penguins Week 2 + Groundhogs, 100s day & Superbowl!!

What a crazy busy week! We spent the first half of the week finishing up Penguins and reading all about Tacky.
Here are our Handprint penguins I forgot to take a picture of last week:

Precious right?  Thanks Pinterest!

And here are the last few pages of our Penguin books and the covers:

And here is some of our Tacky fun:
From Jessica Williamson at Welcome to room 36!

My kids LOVED all the Tacky stories!! They begged for more!

During Math we made our Penguin Glyphs from Deanna Jump's Unit:

Here's our Penguin Wall:

Our Math & Literacy centers this week are the same Penguin centers from last week so I'm not going to repost them, but next week we will start using the Valentine centers from my Valentine's Unit and Pocket Chart Activity.

We spent the second half of our week learning about Groundhogs and celebrating our 100th day of school!
We made predictions about what Punxsutawney Phil would see. Each child made a groundhog:
Then I drew their names one at a time
And they made their predictions on our chart:
The rest of the class tallied their classmates answers:
And when everyone had made their prediction we graphed our results and wrote about them.
Once we knew the result we added it to the ground hogs little sign:

And then did this cute art project:
And again, when we knew the result the kids circled it on their paper:

This was the perfect time for us to learn all about groundhogs, burrows and hibernation!

Here's our groundhogs wall:

Friday was our 100th Day! I forgot we told the kids to dress like they were 100 until they all showed up! Aren't these the cutest 100 year olds you've ever seen?

We had our 100 year old selfs all hung up to decorate our room....

from Deanna Jump
On this special day our kindergarten classes rotate and go to each of the 6 teachers for 20 minutes to do different fun activities. The kids did lots of fun activities with the other teachers like writing about what they would buy with 100 dollars, writing what they didn't know 100 days ago, making a smiley face by coloring in numbers on a 100s chart, making 100s day crowns & necklaces, but in my room we made our 100th day trail mix!

I bought these bowls at the dollar tree and they were the perfect size. I'll definitely be saving them for years to come. Each teacher brought in a snack and I put them into the ten different bowls. Here they are all lined up.

We used candy hearts, fruit loops, cheerios, cheese puffs, marshmallows, pretzels, cocoa puffs, popcorn, goldfish, and raisins. We have some allergies so we opted not to use m&ms or nuts.

Then I placed the bowls all around my room at different centers. As each class came to me they were assigned to a bowl. We counted out ten together into our hands and they took them back to their mats:

Then they went back to the same bowl and we rotated around the room until they had all ten snacks on their mat.
When we had finished rotating and they had all ten snacks (10 pieces of 10 different snacks = 100!) I let them put their snacks into their bag. Then I stapled them and they gave them a shake to mix it all up!
I believe these mats and bag labels were from Eberharts Explorers.

We also made Superbowl Predictions this week. First We talked about what the superbowl is ( a lot of my kids had no idea!) Then the kids made their predictions about who would win. Then we made these adorable football players from A Cupcake for the Teacher, and the kids wrote about who they thought would win. I have to say I am really impressed with my students segmenting and sounding out, they have come so far since the beginning of the year!

Next week we are on to Valentine's Day and Presidents!

As a side note - I've uploaded some new stuff to TPT.
also included but available seperately: Zoo Pocket Chart
also included but available seperately: On The Farm Pocket Chart
Next Up I'm working on my Pirate Centers.....
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to those of you who have supported me on TPT and left such nice feedback. It means so much to me to be able to share these ideas with you and have your kids like them just as much as mine. I won't go into details, but I promise the money earned there is going to a very worth cause.

Here are the books we read this week!

  6. Jennifer, the kids learn new popcorn words each week and that has really helped them with their writing. Besides that we've spent a lot of time during writing practicing stretching out words and most of them have gotten really good at it. I occasionally have to help some of my low ones with their stretching. I don't teach sentence structure but we usually talk about what we are going to write before we write it.
