Election Day!

It's election day! Here in Florida (no hanging chad jokes please) we've been busying learning all about what that means! Today we read some books about elections and then had our own class election. Each child was allowed to vote for the one snack they would like to have at the end of the day.
I was so impressed with the paper on the left...."On election day we vote for who wants to be the president"

Books that helped us understand elections:
Election Day (Rookie Read-About Holidays)
Election Day (Ready-to-Read. Level 1)
Duck for President (New York Times Best Illustrated Books (Awards))
If I Ran For President

Letter T

This week was all about Teddy Bears! Here's what we did.....

Brought our Teddys to school and used them for some explorations. The students noted their bears color, height, weight, texture, size, and fur length.

Guessed How many teddys were in the jar:
Before they went home the students tucked in their bears for the night:

Our Bears slept over and the next day we found our Bears busy at work around our room!

We had a teddy bear picnic with teddy grahams for us, and (Swedish) fish for our teddy bears!

We Learned the classic rhyme "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear"

We did some teddy centers  this week too:
Math Centers -
Counting -

matching numbers to sets -
  Ordering Numbers 1 - 10:

Literacy Centers-
Sight Words:

ABC Order:

Pocket Chart:

As with our other letters we also sorted beginning sounds,

and charted all the Tt words we could think of.

On Friday we loaded up the buses and went to see "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and other Eric Carle stories performed at the Kravis Center.
The Play was performed by the Mermaid Theater of Nova Scotia and here are some pics from their website:
Back at school we mapped out the story elements from the 3 stories:

Rockin and Rollin on the 50th Day!

Today was the 50th Day of school!

This morning we sorted pictures of the 50s from pictures of today and drew ourselves on the 50th Day:

We had a bubble gum blowing contest:

Played "Sock Hop" The kids picked a card from the bottle. If it was a sight word, they read the word. If it was a jukebox we all got up and danced! They LOVED this!

Counted how many pennies it took to play the jukebox:

Matched Records (letters) to jukeboxes (sounds)

We guessed which brown cow (coke float) the cherry was behind, this required the kids to use their number knowledge to call out their guesses. As the kids guessed I flipped over cards to help them narrow down their future guesses.

We spun the record and recorded the beginning sound.

We made brown cows (coke floats) and guessed whether the ice cream would sink or float. (It floats!)

We rotated in the afternoon with Ms. Burnett and Mrs. Curry's classes.

Sock Hop with Ms. Burnett -

Hula Hoop Contest with Mrs. Curry -

Bowling with me! -

At the end of the day we graphed our favorite part of the day! (forgot a pic)

And some tired teachers got in on the action....
Here are some of the dances the kids learned today:
( Mashed Potato)

(The Twist)

(Hand Jive)

What a fun day!!!

I forget where I found the sorting pics... any ideas?
