Five for Friday {11/2/13}

http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2013/11/five-for-friday-linky-party-november-1.html

It's Saturday. I feel like you should expect that from me by now. It's also November. How did that happen? The flu/cold/allergy ugliness has hit our house, which explains my blogging absence. The last time I posted we were wrapping up our five senses unit, and learning about apples. I'm still hoping to blog about apples, but who knows when? Since then we've studied matter, setting, spiders, pumpkins, and next week we're starting Veteran's Day. The rest of November will be full of bats, Thanksgiving and Hannukah! (It's super early this year!)

We survived our first field trip.... to the pumpkin patch! It was a very fun, relaxing, and HOT trip!

This is one of my favorite writing prompts we've done. The kinder-pups wrote about how Christopher Columbus was brave, and then made a connection to a time they were brave.

This week was Say no to drugs week and my class one first prize for our door decorations!

This was such a fun Matter experiment! We popped each balloon to see what was inside. It's from Hope King's Matter Unit!

Here's an entry from our reading notebooks from when we were studying spiders! This cute foldable is from Deanna Jump's Packet.

I hope to get another post in this week!!

Our Fabulous Five Senses!

We've finished our first science unit on senses! We had such a blast learning about each one and what they can tell us about the world around us. We used lots of fun activities from Kindergarten Smiles 5 senses pack, which she just re-did to make even cuter. (It was already adorable!)

Up first we learned all about our ears and how they take in sound waves to the brain to tell us what we're hearing! We played this fun sound bingo game where I played sounds off the computer and they had to listen and cover up what made that sound if they had it.

Next we learned all about our noses and how their are teeny tiny hairs in there (not your nose hairs!) that carry smells to the brain to tell you what you're smelling. We played a fun guessing game where I soaked cotton balls in four different extracts - lemon, orange, mint & maple) and we guessed what they were!

Next up was touch! I filled four different bags with a frozen popsicle, a conch shell, cotton balls, and a metal bracelet and the kids got to feel without looking.

For sight we played a fun fame of I-spy and then the kids recorded down what their object had been. We learned how the pupil shrinks and grows to accommodate more/less light, and also about different color irises. I'm the only one in my class who has blue eyes and not brown so whenever I knelt down to work with kids that day I found them staring at my eyes :)

Last we learned about taste! We talked about different tastes - sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter. And then we did a taste test! Their little faces when they tried baker's chocolate (bitter) were so funny! But I did have one kid say that was their favorite! I forgot to take a picture :(

We wrapped up the unit with a fun popcorn experiment where we listened for how it sounded cooking, how it smelled, then once it was cooked we observed how it looked, felt and tasted!

And that's a wrap! Onward ho to Matter!!

We had so much fun with this pack, make sure you check it out! As much as I love making my own things the beginning of the year is so crazy and I was feeling so stressed and it was so nice to be able to print and go!

Five for Friday! {9/27}

Can you believe it?? I'm actually blogging! We've been SOOO busy, I haven't had a spare second in a while! We've been up to lots of fun things, some of which I'll discuss in further depth in future posts, but here's just a quick look!
Apples! We've had so much fun with apples the past two weeks! We've been doing apple themed math tubs as well as learning about apples during science and Johnny Appleseed during Social Studies. I'll be doing a whole post about our apple fun soon!

Characters! We've been having a blast with characters too! We've learned about what they are, how to describe their appearance, what their actions, thoughts and feelings tell us about them on the inside, and how they can change. Expect a post on all this soon too!
He was not sharing, he was being nice

We had a special visitor on Friday! This sunfire bearded dragon came with a special guest to help us learn all about how animals use their five senses. The kinder-pups LOVED her!!

We're ALMOST at ten minutes of read to self, and have just started read to someone!

We just wrapped up our five senses unit! Again, there'll be a post coming soon :)  Here's a fun popcorn activity we did as a wrap up!

Five for Friday {8/23/13}

Can we please pretend it’s still Friday? I didn't get my post in last night and here's why:
 1. I went to Menchie's last night instead of posting, and I'm not even sorry about it. This is Milk Chocolate Madness mixed with Tropical Banana and filled with chocolate chips, fudgey brownie pieces, fresh banana slices, and cool whip topping.

2. This was our first week of school! Our first three days were staggered start. That means six kids come M, six different kids come T, six different kids come W, and all 18 come starting Thursday. We did a gingerbread hunt all over the school to get to know our school. I think I first saw this idea from Eberhart's Explorers! We read the Gingerbread man loose in the school and I taped the first clue in the back of the book. They were so excited to search around the school and of course we found him (her?) right back in our room. The kids were thrilled that the gingerbread man brought us a yummy snack! All in all, Staggered start was a success! It gave the kids a non-intimidating way to start school in a small group setting. They got to know our school, a few friends, and their teacher. Plus it gave us a chance to get our Florida Kindergarten Readiness Screener done!

3. We're officially a bucket filling class! This is my first year doing Bucket Fillers and I'm loving it! We're using a class bucket and they've really "got" the concept! This craft is from First Grade Fever, and the anchor charts are from Ashley Reed's Bucket Filler Brigade pack!

Sorry, for some reason this didn't save to my camera roll and I couldn't figure out how else to get it off instagram.
4. We made these adorable handprint puzzles our very first day and the kids and parents raved about how much fun they had putting them together and talking about the first day! The poem is a freebie from Deanna Jump

5. I got lots of sweet notes and little presents this week as I'm sure many of you did, but this was by far the best! I have a parent that runs Go Math trainings in our district and he brought me this! It's from *Lakeshore* and we're going to have so much fun with it!

Be sure to link up your Five for Friday (you probably already did and aren't late like me!) over at Doodlebugs Teaching!
